In theĀ 2019ā20 Ligue 1Ā season,Ā Andre Villas-BoasĀ became head coach. Marseille finished second after the season was ended early due to theĀ coronavirus pandemic, thus qualifying for theĀ 2020ā21 UEFA Champions LeagueĀ for the first time since 2013ā14.
In February 2021, after this string of losses, conflict with players, and lack of support from sporting directorĀ Pablo LongoriaĀ and President Jacques-Henri Eyraud, head coachĀ Andre Villas-BoasĀ offered to resign, three days after a violent riot by protesting Marseille fans at the team training grounds had forced postponement of a league match with Rennes.
Marseille sacked Villas-Boas, and replaced the coach with ArgentineĀ Jorge Sampaoli. The club also appointed Pablo Longoria to be the team's new president, replacing Jacques-Henri Eyraud, as Eyraud had also been a target of the ire of Marseille fans.
