Due to theĀ COVID-19 pandemicĀ the entireĀ 2020ā21Ā campaign was played without supporters present as Stoke again finished in mid-table.Ā
The following campaign started brightly with the team challenging for the playoffs, though a poor finish to the season saw them finish in 14th.Ā
A slow start to theĀ 2022ā23 seasonĀ marked the end for O'Neill's time in charge and he was dismissed in August 2022, with Sunderland bossĀ Alex NeilĀ replacing him.
Neil was unable to end Stoke's mid-table purgatory and was replaced byĀ Plymouth Argyle'sĀ Steven SchumacherĀ in December 2023.
